HELIUM PROJECT
Shimmer’s presents one of Mumbai’s leading DJ-producer outfits, the Helium Project, injecting some groove-infected tunes at SHIMMERS. Arijit and Promode, the duo behind Helium Project, will have you craving for their tunes to the extent where you leave the club with dance music as a vice, one that you want to experience every moment.

Though they function as a duo, Arijit and Promode would like you to look beyond the stereotypical image of the ‘band’: a couple of people blaring out redundant rhythms and the ubiquitous love ballad. Their refreshing take on minimal and progressive house tunes are infused with rollicking baselines, screaming arpeggios and piercing percussion's – this, more than anything else truly defines the Helium Project.

Their sound is all about paying homage to their first love, “Music”, and particularly about an explosive electronic experience. In the general scheme of things, their music belongs to the “electronic dance music” genre, but Arijit and Promode believe that their music isn’t just about neat packaging. It’s about pushing the envelope and fusing influences to create a distinctive brand of urban Indian dance music. And that is exactly what Helium Project does.
The duo have played to crowded dance floors across the city at leading venues, including Zenzi, Bandra, the beautiful sunset sessions at Vie Lounge & Deck, Juhu, a visual treat of a set at the kitschy Bling as well as various venues and festivals in the beach state of Goa.

Cambodia, a fractured country hit by a genocidal regime that wiped out an estimated quarter of its population, is a country that is hurting as it’s healing. Sex tourism is rampant and prostitution is a massive industry.

Aman Mahajan traveled to the city of Siem Reap for a workshop with underground Magnum photographer Antoine D'Agata. Fascinated with a vague notion of this exotic land, he decided to shoot the darkness of the city and the women of the night.

He forged a deep and intimate relationship with these women. He ate, drank, lived with them, and in his arcane way, broke barriers of race, language and mistrust. The camera was always around in these interactions. But over time, it became invisible. And then he captured bold, intimate moments in the lives of these beautiful women, some of them men.

The stories these images tell, have a spontaneous depth that is not posed for. Aman is fearless in his endeavor to immerse himself into this somewhat dark world. It’s hard to know the other side unless you've been there.

Aman Mahajan, a filmmaker, is a post-graduate in New Media Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Born and raised in New Delhi, he studied Manufacturing Engineering in Bangalore. He currently works at Vinod Chopra Films, Mumbai.

After 10 years of classical and modern studies, he felt in the underground electronic scene in 1994. He started Djing in 1996.

As event manager, he has always been an activist of the underground house and techno scene. From 1998 to now, he organized with his partners lots of parties in Paris and around, in lots of crazy places like caves, last level of Montparnasse tower in Paris; famous Parisian clubs, boats, trucks for the Paris Technoparade… And with different organizations: Sweet Home, Magic Garden, Fresh Air, Objectif Groove, Electric Zoo.

As Dj, he likes to play raw, groovy and disturbing progressive, house and techno tracks. He had the chance to play in lots of clubs in France, UK and India, as resident Dj as well as one shot Parties: Paris: Batofar, La Maroquinerie, Vinyl Club, Concorde Atlantique, Cabaret Sauvage, l‘Enfer, Cavern‘, , Tour Montparnasse, Technoparade Paris, OPA Bastille…
India: Rain Club, Velocity Mumbai, SUN BURN Festival, Fire and Ice Mumbai, UK: Velvet Club, C club…

And with well-known artists: Talvin Singh, Midival Punditz, King Britt, Agoria, Playin’4 the city, DJ Deep, Terry Francis, Djul’z, Jérome Pacman, Tom Parris, Yayo, Cyril K, Dan ghenacia, Silicone Soul…

In 2007, he joined the label Fat Form record, founded by his friend Myriam, aka DJ Miss Tick, Dj Natas and D-Sens. His set gets more progressive and punchy.Settled in Goa since oct 2008, He joined the Electric Zoo team and continue to organize and play a lot there, spreading Fat sounds around.
His sensibility and technical approach of the mix create a real relation between DJ and dance-floor, a celebration of sounds and movements through rhythms of life…

In November 2009, He’ll start a weekly residency @ « liquid sky club » in North Goa, and will co-manage the logistic and the artistically direction of the club with his friend Dj Axailes Solar.

Shy-O and Axailes are now working on an instinctive duo: « Dj KILL & MR HYDE » combining computers, desks and external effects to propose a rocking LIVE between, Minimal, techno and Progressive: Watch Out!!!

When we headlined Pinktober 2009 at Hard Rock Café – Pune, we realized that it was one of the most significant nights not just of our careers, but our lives. INR 88,000 was collected via donations as part of that Breast Cancer Awareness gig. We met not just new fans, but fans who we hadn’t met in years (you have no clue how special it was to reconnect). If that last gig was any indication of what Hard Rock Café – Pune is all about, we’d love to be back as often as our manic schedules will allow us.

BAYBYLON EXTENSON, is the coming together of 5 very diverse musicians, spanning different styles, genres, and generations for the primary purpose of playing music that feels good in the pit of your stomach.

Each musician brings to the this band his own style and set of influences to create what can be at best, termed as a “funk based, rock flavoured, indi-influenced, jamband reggae”

The Musicians:

JOHN KO- ( Voice, Guitars, Percussion ): A Korean born in Uganda, raised in Europe & America, lived in Indonesia, and discovered his reggae heart in Ethiopia, before making India his home. A true blue world musician. As an ex-rocker, and ex-front man for the popular 90s band HAZE, John sings from his soul and it shows. He likes to experiment with reggae & other forms to create his own unique voice.

OBED ZEME- ( Guitars, Voice ): Explosive and lyrical, and self taught, Obed is a versatile musician and songwriter. Obed combines a skillful rock style with melodic soloing in his playing to create passionate music.
He has performed with the Cannibals, Nirvana and North East Express and is the founding member of Metal Band Messianic Troopers.

VINAYAK GUPTA ( Keyboards, Voice ) The always smiling, bright eyed ‘baby’ of the band, he is the son of a Classic Hindustani singer and was nurtured in the pristine hills of Kasauli. Vinayak is gifted musician with two hearts. A trained Indian classical vocalist with an intense love of funk, fusion, & jazz keys. He is deeply & successfully involved in professional music production, keyboard programming and arranging.

LALRINAWMA TOCHHAWNG- ( Bass, Voice ): That’s “ Mama’ to the Indian music community at large He is the glue that binds this band together. A member of famous late 80s bands, Warlock & Ashanti, Mama has re-emerged out of self imposed retirement back onto the music scene as a sensitive, groove based bass player. Mama is also a well- known music promoter in the city

ABHINAV DHAR- ( Drums ): The ‘old man’ in the band, Abhinav has always been a semi-pro and always regretted his advertising career having taken precedence over his music and his drums. For those who might remember, he was the drummer for the legendary 80’s band called Collegium, and more recently, Whimsy Logic.

Whirling Kalapas is the acoustic-ish band created by Mahesh Tinaikar and Uday Benegal, the guitar player and singer of the trailblazing rock band Indus Creed.

Jai Row Kavi, Kenneth Rebello and Sankarshan ‘Shanks’ Kini complete the outfit. Their music is a whimsical take on an array of things—past hits, new songs, obscure tunes by artists they really like, and then some...

With Indus Creed, Uday and Mahesh toured the world, including the USSR, the Middle East and Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival in Reading (UK), to name a few. They also won a bunch of awards, including an Asia-wide MTV Video Music Award for their song “Pretty Child,” and shared the stage with Bon Jovi, playing to more than 40,000 people in Bombay.

In 1996, MTV flew down Guns ’N Roses guitarist Slash to play live with Indus Creed in Bangalore. They were also the first non-Western band about whom MTV produced a “Rockumentary.”

Uday moved to New York in 1999, where he started his multiculti Indo–rock and funk band Alms For Shanti. AFS scorched through NYC’s club circuit and played at numerous festivals and clubs in North America and India. Uday moved back to Bombay in 2008.

Whirling Kalapas was born in 2009 when Uday and Mahesh regrouped after more than 10 years. The duo that wrote such seminal hits as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Renegade” and “Pretty Child” are back. The music scene in India will be the richer for it.

Inspiration - After finishing Liberation, I thought for a long time what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted to create an album of song-based music but still within the aesthetic space I had found in my previous work. It took 2 years after completing Liberation to begin work on Broken English. Within this time I began working with artists like Dierdra Dubois and Sophie Mitchalitsianos on there solo material. I was taken by both of there vocal styles and began creating music catered for there voices. I was simultaneously touring with both the Realize Live band and as of late the Kollektiv Krew. This was bringing together sonic influences from all ends of the spectrum. From hard breaks and psy-trance to acoustic rock and Hip Hop to cinematic film music.

Prep-Production - I began pre-production for this album in January of 2004 at my home studio in Brooklyn, NYC. During this time I was creating, composing and programming tracks from all perspectives - some of which would make it to the record and some not. Everything I was doing at this point was, in thought, geared towards a song based album - but in reality all I was left with was a more structured version of my previous catalogue.
I needed a change of perspective.
In October I found myself living in Los Angeles with not much as far as a studio. (I had left my studio in storage in NYC). I bought myself a $40 acoustic guitar at the local antique shop and began the process of looking at the album again. I sat on my balcony in L.A., strumming out songs that would eventually become "City Lights," "Dancing at Sunset," and "Innocence and Power." The music and the songs started to take the right shape and attitude... it felt right.

Jayant Luthra was born in New Delhi, where he started his Dj career at the age of 16. He obtained his first club residency in 1998. With his dynamic force and technical skills he was able to revive the true underground clubbing scene in the capital city. Jayant has established himself as one the best electronic acts in the country. His wide repertoire of music background includes Progressive house, breakbeats, Indian electronica, ambient/chill, techno/minimal and psychedelic trance. Due to his experience, he has become quite versatile in his music. Jayant has played with some of the best Dj’s and artists from all over the world. Such as Karsh Kale, Chebi Sabah, Talvin Singh, Namito, Alex flatner, Quicksilver, Midival PunditZ, and many more. In 2000, he collaborated with the Midival PunditZ and started playing for the infamous ‘Cyber Mehfil’. This collaboration was a catalyst in his career, not only as a dj, but as a music producer as well. With the help of the Punditz, Jayant was able to become more multitalented as an artist. He has won numerous dj mixing competitions like DMC, Times Music war of the Dj’s, and holds a record no. of titles from the year 1998-2002. In later 2002, he was the first Dj to perform live with a rock band, Orange Street, as a turntablist and was the electronic end of the band. During this period simultaneously worked with the fashion industry by composing music for some of the best designers. He also, for the past 8 years has been doing music for India Fashion week. On going work includes film scores and remixes for various international artist and film projects like L.A, a Hollywood production with Karsh kale, programming for Breathing underwater (Burn), and a few independent films and documentaries. He is currently working on his debut album.

Master of numerous music industry desciplines, Menno de Jong has already carved enough notches on the dance tree for someone twice his age. His production & remix career has seen him record for some of Europe’s biggest trance labels and he’s the owner of lauded Dutch independent Intuition
Recordings. A bona-fide Podcast pioneer, he’s produced and presented the much respected and widely-syndicated Intuition Radio show for the last 3 years. As a DJ he’s closed gigs for Tiësto & Paul van Dyk, is currently ranked at No. 62 in DJMagazine’s Top 100 Chart and has spun in over 25
countries.

At 17 he progressed from school discos & friends parties to a two year residency at an underground club in Eindhoven. Further charged by the reception ‘Guanxi’ received from DJs and still aged just 20 years old he threw himself into music nearly full-time, juggling his busy schedule with his studies at university. In the last three years he has successfully catapulted himself into the upper echelons of the trance DJ hierarchy. Having now spun in over 25 countries, Menno has played at clubs and events that are themselves the virtual synonyms of trance. Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Creamfields, Trance Energy, SensationWhite, Mysteryland, Amnesia Ibiza, Love Parade, Berlin, The Gaudi Arena in Moscow & WMC in Miami have all hosted his pin-point perfect tune selection and sophisticated mixing style. Alongside that he has DJed with some of the biggest names in the scene, including trailblazers such as Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, The Prodigy, Paul van Dyk, Marco V and Markus Schulz. With his non-stop smile, energetic dancing and ever-present contact with the audience, he continues to share his passion for evocative melodies and dance-floor rocking beats.

Menno’s rise through the deck-spinning ranks has been suitably reflected in DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 poll. He debuted at 72 in 2006 before rising 10 places to 62 a year later, and a staggering 14 places to 48 in 2008. He is also ranked at No. 11 in Trance Addict’s annual top 100 Trance DJs poll.
Following an inspiring tour of Africa, Menno broke into the compilation market in mid-2007. Mixing the first in a projected series of country-themed albums, Intuition Sessions Vol. 1: South Africa gathered together the cream of the label’s highly recognizable crop.

De Jong was also at the leading-edge of the internet radio and podcasting phenomenon, launching his Intuition Radio show in 2005. The weekly episodes rapidly became required listening for the internet’s trance-hungry hoards, with Menno showcasing the very best in EDM. The show has now
gone monthly and progressed onto the airwaves of XM Radio, Dutch national Slam FM & Worldspace with tens of thousands of listeners tuning in each week. The Intuition Podcast is also available as a download via iTunes.

Heath has played with leading names in the House & Techno scene & shared his musical diversity/technical skills with European audience's in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Spain, Ukraine & the U.K. He is also a regular face on the club & festival circuit in Australia.

Heath has been rocking dancefloors across Europe & Australia with unrivaled enthusiasm & a versatility in style that few Dj's can claim, laying down everything from filthy electro/tech/minimal to pure deep/jackin/funked up House.

Not afraid to push his Dj sets technically, he currently uses a combination of Traktor Scratch Pro & Audio 8 in his DJ setup allowing looping & re-editing of tracks on the fly. Heath also has a keen interest in music production & has been spending time working in a studio.
