When we headlined Pinktober 2009 at Hard Rock Café – Pune, we realized that it was one of the most significant nights not just of our careers, but our lives. INR 88,000 was collected via donations as part of that Breast Cancer Awareness gig. We met not just new fans, but fans who we hadn’t met in years (you have no clue how special it was to reconnect). If that last gig was any indication of what Hard Rock Café – Pune is all about, we’d love to be back as often as our manic schedules will allow us.

BAYBYLON EXTENSON, is the coming together of 5 very diverse musicians, spanning different styles, genres, and generations for the primary purpose of playing music that feels good in the pit of your stomach.

Each musician brings to the this band his own style and set of influences to create what can be at best, termed as a “funk based, rock flavoured, indi-influenced, jamband reggae”

The Musicians:

JOHN KO- ( Voice, Guitars, Percussion ): A Korean born in Uganda, raised in Europe & America, lived in Indonesia, and discovered his reggae heart in Ethiopia, before making India his home. A true blue world musician. As an ex-rocker, and ex-front man for the popular 90s band HAZE, John sings from his soul and it shows. He likes to experiment with reggae & other forms to create his own unique voice.

OBED ZEME- ( Guitars, Voice ): Explosive and lyrical, and self taught, Obed is a versatile musician and songwriter. Obed combines a skillful rock style with melodic soloing in his playing to create passionate music.
He has performed with the Cannibals, Nirvana and North East Express and is the founding member of Metal Band Messianic Troopers.

VINAYAK GUPTA ( Keyboards, Voice ) The always smiling, bright eyed ‘baby’ of the band, he is the son of a Classic Hindustani singer and was nurtured in the pristine hills of Kasauli. Vinayak is gifted musician with two hearts. A trained Indian classical vocalist with an intense love of funk, fusion, & jazz keys. He is deeply & successfully involved in professional music production, keyboard programming and arranging.

LALRINAWMA TOCHHAWNG- ( Bass, Voice ): That’s “ Mama’ to the Indian music community at large He is the glue that binds this band together. A member of famous late 80s bands, Warlock & Ashanti, Mama has re-emerged out of self imposed retirement back onto the music scene as a sensitive, groove based bass player. Mama is also a well- known music promoter in the city

ABHINAV DHAR- ( Drums ): The ‘old man’ in the band, Abhinav has always been a semi-pro and always regretted his advertising career having taken precedence over his music and his drums. For those who might remember, he was the drummer for the legendary 80’s band called Collegium, and more recently, Whimsy Logic.

Whirling Kalapas is the acoustic-ish band created by Mahesh Tinaikar and Uday Benegal, the guitar player and singer of the trailblazing rock band Indus Creed.

Jai Row Kavi, Kenneth Rebello and Sankarshan ‘Shanks’ Kini complete the outfit. Their music is a whimsical take on an array of things—past hits, new songs, obscure tunes by artists they really like, and then some...

With Indus Creed, Uday and Mahesh toured the world, including the USSR, the Middle East and Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD festival in Reading (UK), to name a few. They also won a bunch of awards, including an Asia-wide MTV Video Music Award for their song “Pretty Child,” and shared the stage with Bon Jovi, playing to more than 40,000 people in Bombay.

In 1996, MTV flew down Guns ’N Roses guitarist Slash to play live with Indus Creed in Bangalore. They were also the first non-Western band about whom MTV produced a “Rockumentary.”

Uday moved to New York in 1999, where he started his multiculti Indo–rock and funk band Alms For Shanti. AFS scorched through NYC’s club circuit and played at numerous festivals and clubs in North America and India. Uday moved back to Bombay in 2008.

Whirling Kalapas was born in 2009 when Uday and Mahesh regrouped after more than 10 years. The duo that wrote such seminal hits as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Renegade” and “Pretty Child” are back. The music scene in India will be the richer for it.

Inspiration - After finishing Liberation, I thought for a long time what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted to create an album of song-based music but still within the aesthetic space I had found in my previous work. It took 2 years after completing Liberation to begin work on Broken English. Within this time I began working with artists like Dierdra Dubois and Sophie Mitchalitsianos on there solo material. I was taken by both of there vocal styles and began creating music catered for there voices. I was simultaneously touring with both the Realize Live band and as of late the Kollektiv Krew. This was bringing together sonic influences from all ends of the spectrum. From hard breaks and psy-trance to acoustic rock and Hip Hop to cinematic film music.

Prep-Production - I began pre-production for this album in January of 2004 at my home studio in Brooklyn, NYC. During this time I was creating, composing and programming tracks from all perspectives - some of which would make it to the record and some not. Everything I was doing at this point was, in thought, geared towards a song based album - but in reality all I was left with was a more structured version of my previous catalogue.
I needed a change of perspective.
In October I found myself living in Los Angeles with not much as far as a studio. (I had left my studio in storage in NYC). I bought myself a $40 acoustic guitar at the local antique shop and began the process of looking at the album again. I sat on my balcony in L.A., strumming out songs that would eventually become "City Lights," "Dancing at Sunset," and "Innocence and Power." The music and the songs started to take the right shape and attitude... it felt right.

Jayant Luthra was born in New Delhi, where he started his Dj career at the age of 16. He obtained his first club residency in 1998. With his dynamic force and technical skills he was able to revive the true underground clubbing scene in the capital city. Jayant has established himself as one the best electronic acts in the country. His wide repertoire of music background includes Progressive house, breakbeats, Indian electronica, ambient/chill, techno/minimal and psychedelic trance. Due to his experience, he has become quite versatile in his music. Jayant has played with some of the best Dj’s and artists from all over the world. Such as Karsh Kale, Chebi Sabah, Talvin Singh, Namito, Alex flatner, Quicksilver, Midival PunditZ, and many more. In 2000, he collaborated with the Midival PunditZ and started playing for the infamous ‘Cyber Mehfil’. This collaboration was a catalyst in his career, not only as a dj, but as a music producer as well. With the help of the Punditz, Jayant was able to become more multitalented as an artist. He has won numerous dj mixing competitions like DMC, Times Music war of the Dj’s, and holds a record no. of titles from the year 1998-2002. In later 2002, he was the first Dj to perform live with a rock band, Orange Street, as a turntablist and was the electronic end of the band. During this period simultaneously worked with the fashion industry by composing music for some of the best designers. He also, for the past 8 years has been doing music for India Fashion week. On going work includes film scores and remixes for various international artist and film projects like L.A, a Hollywood production with Karsh kale, programming for Breathing underwater (Burn), and a few independent films and documentaries. He is currently working on his debut album.

Recordings. A bona-fide Podcast pioneer, he’s produced and presented the much respected and widely-syndicated Intuition Radio show for the last 3 years. As a DJ he’s closed gigs for Tiësto & Paul van Dyk, is currently ranked at No. 62 in DJMagazine’s Top 100 Chart and has spun in over 25
countries.

At 17 he progressed from school discos & friends parties to a two year residency at an underground club in Eindhoven. Further charged by the reception ‘Guanxi’ received from DJs and still aged just 20 years old he threw himself into music nearly full-time, juggling his busy schedule with his studies at university. In the last three years he has successfully catapulted himself into the upper echelons of the trance DJ hierarchy. Having now spun in over 25 countries, Menno has played at clubs and events that are themselves the virtual synonyms of trance. A Note on the Artist (in her own words):

"Who said Parisian girls don't travel? I first got involved in djing by organising parties in London for a couple of years until someone had the good idea to forget some turntables for a week...and that was it! I was truly hooked. Since then, all the cities I've lived in (London, New york and Paris) have a left a profound influence on the music I play. I've also started up a dj collective the Screaming Loulous in Paris (www.screamingloulous.com) and a couple of residencies in the UK (Return of the Jeudi and B-Side).

Thanks to the Templiers managment and "Gravity" I had the pleasure to play at le REX club for the french festival "fete de la musique" for 3 years now. I also played amongst some of the best djs on the scene (Ken Ishii, Scratch Massive, Brett Longman, Camea, Siskid, David Malteze."

When we started Sound Tamasha almost exactly one year ago, none of us knew where it would take us. In fact, we still don't know, even after more than 25 parties.

Our thanks goes to two sides, since we couldn't have done all that without two distinct groups of people: the first are our artists - musicians and DJs - without whom there would be no Sound Tamasha.

The second, equally important group of people that make up the success and the fun of every Sound Tamasha event is YOU, the audience - friends and fans - who come to our events and contribute to the energy of every single Tamasha.

To celebrate our first birthday in this spirit, André Gardeja will get the support of some good DJing friends this time. There will be special appearances of artists you already know, but also some that we never featured on our parties - expect the unexpected and be ready to be surprised.

Sadly, this will also be André's last gig in Delhi, so please come over, bring your friends (as always) and let's dance André good bye ...
