Gareth: "After several years with a hard rock band - Split - I found I'd written a few songs that didn't need a band, and in fact sounded their best just the way they were, with vocals and an acoustic guitar. I somehow didn't know what the hell to do with them, till Mel, our guitarist, suggested I write more songs in the same vein and start performing them solo. And that's how Dischordian started. (I'd just discovered Discordianism shortly before this, and since I couldn't think of anything better, decided to temporarily call the project Dischordian. Now the name seems to have stuck.) Our other guitarist, Aviv, accompanies me sometimes, but usually it's just me. I don't play very fancy guitar, but this project is more about melodies and moods - if a song needs more complex guitar work, I'll probably take it to Split. And that's about it as far as a bio goes. I hope you enjoy the music, and I hope to see you at gigs."
HEADLINING ACT
AURORA JANE
Band Members:
Aurora Jane - Guitars, Vocals
Tim - Bass
Jai Row Kavi - Drums
A girl from the country town of Ballarat she may be, but Aurora Jane has traveled far and wide with her music, performing to thousands upon thousands around the globe.
From the Australian desert to India, Europe and North America, Aurora Jane's travel and performance schedule over the past few years has been hectic.
"I've been on the road without a permanent base for almost four years…it is amazing how supportive the universe is when you just follow your dreams and carve your own distinct pathway. Somehow, there is always a new adventure, a beautiful meal to share with others, a safe and comfortable place to lay my head".
Once described as 'the secret love child of Jimi Hendrix and Ani Di Franco', this fiery- haired, guitar-wielding songstress headlined the famous Roots Festival in North East India in both 2006 and 2007, to live audiences in excess of 20,000 people, alongside local and international acts and Grammy-award winning chant-master Lama Tashi.
Yet Aurora Jane's biggest live show to date was back in 2004, when she headlined World Music Festival Ladakh.
Celebrating music as the ultimate cross-cultural communication device has long been Aurora Jane's passion.
Back in 2002 she travelled to East Timor, recording and producing music documentaries for ABC Radio, Radio National and Triple J about the role of music in East Timor's struggle for Independence. She also spends 16 weeks a year out on remote indigenous communities in Australia writing songs with young people, providing instrumental tuition.
Aurora Jane has just completed a multi-city tour of India as headline act for the RSJ Kingfisher Pubrockfest. She was so well received by Indian audiences that Mumbai-based Blue Frog Records has penned an India-territory recording deal with Jane for her next album. Aside from an interview for (India's circulation of) Rolling Stone magazine, Aurora Jane has been featured in two television specials by India's most prominent TV network NDTV.
Her next album due for late 2009 release will illustrate the global perspective well, with some of her album being recorded in India while other tracks will be cut in North America and in Australia.
